The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug (2013)
 Not as good as the first in my opinion - trying to hard to be a prequel set to LOTR, too many "connections" that shouldn't be there, too many made up characters and events that are just a little too untrue to the original, and the sense of time too messed up.  But still enjoyable overall.

Rush (2013)
Kind of a slow start, but builds in intensity throughout. Characters are relatively complex. You don't know who you want to 'win' not hero/anti-hero - they're real people - both with difficult personalities but of completely different natures. In the end, they both win, in different ways.

Now You See Me (2013)
Smoke and Mirrors try to deceive you that there's a story here. Likable actors. What would've saved this movie is if the script writers had been clever enough to actually plant seeds/evidence to support the conclusion while still surprising the audience. As it is, if you're surprised, it is just because there is no support for it so guessing it would be just as valid as any other guess. They keep saying these people are doing such amazing things, but the real-life audience is not as amazed as the ones in the film. Not the worst movie I've seen, but not much going on here, honestly.

2012 movies I've seen:


Bel Ami (2012) - pointless, had a little potential but not quite fulfilled.

Battleship (2012)  Very ridiculous waste of money, but can be entertaining if you know that's what you're getting into.




Graphic violence, great period visuals, semi-redeemable semi-developed characters, appealing anyway to some extent.

Lawless (2012)


Sedate, charming mother/son road trip.

The Guilt Trip (2012)


Takes a bit to build, but is more and more impressive as it goes.  Good intro to the trilogy, can't wait for more.

Some parts of this didn't quite work, but other parts were great. And Daniel Craig as Bond is still very appealing.

Trouble with the Curve (2012)
Clint Eastwood is the same in every movie any more. Amy Adams is very very good here. Timberlake's character and plot line is far too unbelievable and ridiculous.


Old-school style action movie about a bike messenger who gets a dangerous package to deliver.  Recommended.

Four months later I have a little trouble remembering the plot, but remember not being disappointed even though it wasn't Matt Damon.

I don't really see how this improved on the original story.  Not terrible, though.

This is pretty hard to top.  Bane was a little annoying but everything else was totally awesome.

I wasn't particularly excited about a new Spiderman because I was perfectly fine with Tobey Maguire but this really is an improvement.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)


I'm embarrassed to say I saw this. Not super graphic and their style of dancing - Um, I don't get the appeal in that, but yeah they do have hard bodies and I guess that's all that matters - better to avert one's gaze.

Magic Mike (2012)


I'm even more embarassed I saw this one. Extremely raunchy.  Yeah a few laughs, but at what expense?

I forgot we saw this.  Pretty much a waste of film overall, but yeah you may laugh.  

That's My Boy (2012)


Really dumb story.  I like The Rock anyway.

Actually a pretty good rendition of this story.

Mirror Mirror (2012)


Yes, these came out in 2011 but I saw in 2012.  The Daniel Craig one is good, but the Swedish subtitled ones are better - no fault to the actors, but the Swedish are just truer to the books.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)


Mostly faithful strong rendition of the first book in the trilogy.  Much more meat in this story and strength of characters than Twilight ever had.  The Hunger Games (2012)



This movie was shelved and released late the companies had so little faith in it.  Extremely predictable and formulaic but this is not worse than, say, Timothy Green.
